This is, as Gombrich (p. 82) notes, an important element of Greek naturalism: Although the realistic depiction of an individual was one form of naturalism that some Greek artists pursued, there is also in Greek art a type of naturalism that erases person perfections in the subject to produce an abstracted, idealized form. The Getty Kouros (like any kouros) is too perfect to be any real individual, and yet it does reflect strain of Greek naturalism that celebrated the ideal globe on the Platonic form.
