There are many different approaches in psychology that strive to help psychologists understand the way creation behave, think, and do the things they do. Although psychologist from each country would probably tell you that their individual field is the best method, all approaches are important to the field of psychology, and each play an important role in the field.
The outgrowth psychological approach is functionalism. Functionalists studied how the mental processes serve in enabling people to adapt to their environment. This approach was started by William James, who was for the most part influenced by the ideas of Charles Darwin and the theory of natural selection. Unlike structuralism, which broke elaborate the assuredness into small parts to be studied separately, functionalism looked at the mental process as a whole, and tried to let out the functions the mental processes served.
Another psychological approach is the psychoanalytic theory, which deals with the unconscious mind, and how it effects a psyches conscious actions and thoughts. Jean-Martin Charcot and Pierre Janet found that when patients were under hypnosis, they were able to remember and fundamentally relive events that they could not remember when conscious.



Sigmund Freud was intrigued by this, and through this psychoanalytic theory approach, came up with psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis focused on carry unconscious material into the conscious awareness, and proving how the way a person behaved, thought, and acted was largely dependent on their unconscious mind and ago experiences.
As the times changed, and the United States was enjoying a time of felicity and prosperity, the Psychoanalysis approach was being viewed as dark, focusing on peoples problems rather than their possibilities.
