Act One
Only a single character in the play is solely responsible for the decision to murder Duncan. Although many would say that the Three Witches and maam Macbeth were responsible, none of them had provided the idea of murder. Macbeth had arisen with that stiff act of murdering Duncan solely on his own. Upon meeting with the witches, Macbeth and Banquo were both told of their fates: Macbeth macrocosm king and Banquos children being kings. However, Banquo did not consider murder. He says to Macbeth, That, trusted home / Might yet enkindle you unto the lead / Besides the thane of Cawdor. But tis strange. / And oftentimes, to win us to our harm / The instruments of apparition tell us truths / Win us with honest trifles, to weave us / In deepest consequence. / Cousins, a word, I pray you. (1.3.129-135). Banquo is monition Macbeth that even though the witches words are attractive to them both, their smutty forces are promoting Macbeth to be led to more harm than greatness. Macbeth rectify away thinks of killing Duncan: If good, why do I repay to that suggestion / Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair / And make my sit heart knock at my ribs / Against the use of nature?
beat fears / Are less than horrible imaginings: / My thought, whose murder yet is tho fantastical, / Shakes so my single state of man that function / Is muted in surmise; and nothing is / But what is not. (1.3.144-152). Here, Macbeth desires and imagines the final stage of Duncan. The witches did not tell either Macbeth or Banquo about how Macbeth ordain become king. Macbeth has invented the idea by himself in his own thoughts. Although Lady Macbeth has played a significant part of persuading Macbeth to do the deed, it is ultimately still Macbeths original decision. After Duncans murder, it has been wholly Macbeth responsible for the murder of Macduffs family and also Banquo, no yearner confiding to his wife for his ambitions.
