synopsis of the word picture: This film is the classic story of Joanna, a appeal and innocent young lady, who falls in love with John, a black doctor, and decides to marry him. It is the story of how people around them, including their parents, friends and others, defend to the news of a possible conjugal union between a black man and a white woman. As the movie opens, theyre at the San Francisco Airport preparing to tell her parents, Matt (Tracy) and Christine (Hepburn)Dayton their plans: to marry and exist in Switzerland. Where Joanna is pretty much convinced that her parents would have no problem with the situation, because they had always raised her to believe that blacks and whites were equal, and that that any motley of racial intolerance was unacceptable; but John is distressed as to how will her parents react towards the situation.
