Portuguese people who immigrated to the States have origins that include mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira. The Azores are a series of 9 islands in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean. As usual with immigrant history in America, first generations of Portuguese were faced with low paying, unskilled and back-breaking labor if they expected to be hired.
